#20 YouTube

Gotta love YouTube for all those hard to find (and watch) moments that are captured on film.

So what is YouTube? According to the website " YouTube is an online video streaming service that allows anyone to view and share videos that have been uploaded by our members.". It is a free service that anyone can use, all you need is Internet access and a computer with the following:

  1. Macromedia Flash Player 7.0+ plug-in
  2. Windows 2000 or higher with latest updates installed
  3. Mac OS X 10.3 or higher
  4. Firefox 1.1+, Internet Explorer 5.0+, or Safari 1.0+
  5. Broadband connection with 500+ Kbps
What I found on YouTube:

Stargate Atlantis Rap:

Spaceys Award: Best Sci-Fi Character:

Now why did I choose these videos to share? Well because the poll I did a few weeks ago showed that some of you (the people of actually read or view my blog, why you bother I will never know) are fans of sci-fi like me! Plus they are a good indication of what is avalaible on YouTube. There are many types of videos on offer at YouTube, not just stupid pranks like the movies "Jackarse" although there are alot of those too, you can find basically anything on nay subject matter from entertainment to science experiments (including "Mythbusters" type videos!).

As for applying YouTube to the library ... well I guess you could have video tutorials for using the catalogue, Dewey decimal, researching and the like, then you could also have video collections online similar to online journals and magazines, if the storage was large enough and you had the legal rights library's could even have movies and music videos available online. That probably wouldn't happen since of the propriety and legal issues involved ... pitty, it would save time during check in and out since we would have so many DVD's being borrowed.

Overall YouTube can be a good waste of time. There's a lot of junk but you can find a few gems in between the rubbish.
